Marble Falls baseball strings together hits, makes Jarrell’s defense fold under pressure for another win

The Marble Falls High School baseball team stomped Jarrell 13-3 March 24 to end the first round of District 24-4A play at 4-1 for second in the standings.

The Mustangs now turn their attention to a road trip to Lampasas (1-4) Tuesday, March 28, before hosting the Badgers Friday, March 31. First pitch for both contests is at 7 p.m. This is a change in the district format when coaches voted to play each other three times during the district campaign.

Jarrell (2-3 in district play) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning until the Mustangs responded with four runs in the third and three in the fourth for a 7-1 advantage.

The Cougars answered with two runs in the fifth.

“They got back-to-back doubles and scored and we got out of it,” head coach Tyler Porter said.

That only compelled Marble Falls to respond with five in its half of the inning for a 12-3 lead. The Mustangs added another run in the sixth.

“We scored 17 or 18 against Llano,” Porter said. “We’ve had several double-digit run totals. We swing it well.”

Jake Carter and Cale Cochran each had 3 RBIs off 3 hits.

Jarrell committed six errors to the Mustangs’ one. Marble Falls had 14 hits.

Pitcher Cochran (2-0, 1 save in district play) scattered six hits and struck out three in six innings. Porter noted the pitcher’s short memory is an asset that benefits the team.

“He throws strikes on the mound,” Porter said. “He can throw two or three pitches for strikes and stay in the zone. If he gives up a hit, he doesn’t worry about it. It’s been good for him. He throws around the strike zone and doesn’t give up freebies.”

The other positive is the Mustangs’ commitment to playing defense.

“When we make good defensive plays, we’re a good team,” the coach said.
